Dark habits get lit up by bright colors and the fun is in the details, whether the duo are drinking Spindrifts, or cum is glistening all over Elliot’s t-shirt after jacking himself off, or—speaking of t-shirts—he’s wearing Sonic Youth’s “Washingmachine”. I Want Your Sex is a briskly paced and naughty romp, and a spanking critique of sex, art, and intergenerational attitudes towards both. Plus it’s full of snappy rejoinders. Elliot’s roommate Apple (Chase Sui Wonders) describes Elliot’s glacial girlfriend as “what AI would generate if you said total bitch” and Erika pontificates that “fucking people gives a sense of identity and control.”
Hoffman delivers a nuanced performance as a naïve 23-year-old coming to terms with his own frustrations, desires and satisfaction. His masochism is tinged with sheer sweetness and genuine charm. Wilde goes over-the-top with such deliberate aggression that her vulnerability and insecurity peek through, courting pathos and some empathy for her batshit crazy behavior. Costuming is sexy. Art direction pops. Product placement perfect. The underlying moral? You are what you eat, so to speak.
